What is Benning Road Transfer Station?
The Benning Road Transfer Station is one of the two solid waste disposal stations in Washington, DC, at 3200 Benning Road, NE. It accepts Household Hazardous Waste and electronics for recycling.
Document shredding services are also provided. Before, HHW and electronics used to be dropped off at Fort Totten. However, it was changed in October 2021, switching the drop-off location of special waste at Benning Road.
Hours of Operation
The original Benning Road Transfer Station hours are between 7 am and 2 pm every Saturday. However, it was temporarily closed starting June 3, 2023, due to repairs and renovation.
The special waste collection was relocated to the RFK Stadium with a new schedule: one Thursday (10 am to 2 pm) and one Saturday (7 am to 2 pm) each month. The new address is RFK Stadium Lot 3, 2400 E Capitol St NE, and the relocation will last through March 2024.
Acceptable Household Hazardous Waste Items
These items contain hazardous ingredients that harm the environment and cause human illnesses. Proper disposal is imperative to prevent it from entering water sources because it seeps into the soil, contaminating it.

Unwanted electronics are also accepted for recycling. These may include computers, laptops, PDAs, and more.

Document shredding occurs every first Saturday of the month. Residents can have their credit cards and personal documents shredded for free. Business/commercial material and more than five boxes of personal papers are not allowed.
What the Transfer Stations Don’t Accept
There are some items that Transfer Stations won’t accept. Fortunately, there are many alternative disposal options you can try.
Items that are not allowed:
- Ammunitions and explosives: Bring them to the nearest police station
- Air conditioners: Make a trash collection appointment

- Tires: Up to four tires can be dropped off at the Fort Fort Totten Transfer Station
How Much is the Charge for Using the Transfer Stations?
The Transfer Stations are free of charge for District Residents who want to safely dispose of their unwanted personal property and waste. However, commercial and institutional haulers must have an account. The cost of disposal for these businesses will depend on the material type and tonnage.
